Providing additional treatment for new septic system installation in Northeastern British Columbia

The ClearPod drop-in treatment solution was chosen for a site in the Fort St. John area of British Columbia, Canada. Existing treatment infrastructure was inadequate for the client, who is intending to sell the property. The site was using a small lagoon system for on-site wastewater treatment, treating a family-size home with 4 bedrooms. The lagoon location was central between neighboring property line for shared use with the neighbor property. A wastewater treatment upgrade was required to isolate treatment within the property.

Working with the client, Northern Waste Water Systems (NWWS) replaced the existing wastewater treatment infrastructure and upgraded to a new septic system in Autumn of 2019. The system was designed to meet property requirements and treat wastewater for an actual flow of 190 gal/day. The install by NWWS consisted of a buried 1400 gal septic tank, leachfield dispersal, and a single Standard ClearPod for additional treatment.

ClearPod technology is a robust, drop-in, fixed film aeration unit that takes about 1 hour to install. It decreases the organic loading to the leachfield by 85% but still allows solids to settle due to gentle aeration supplied to the fixed film. By converting the septic tank into a treatment system we improve the quantity of wastewater organic material that might clog the leachfield.

Wastewater testing in February 2020 showed effluent from the enhanced septic system was being well treated with TSS of 13 mg/l and BOD of 27 mg/l. By implementing ClearPod into the system the client is ensured well treated wastewater will be delivered to the associated leachfield. The upgrade solution was provided at a low capital cost, low energy cost, low install time, and minimal soil disturbance to the surrounding area.
